Are you too rich to care?

Today I passed a man who was talking to his wife, his exact words were “why should I give my hard earned money to these people when they don’t work themselves” – this kind of ignorance I will never understand.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet and spare change in a dish some place you are among 8% of the worlds wealthy

It’s not the first time I’ve heard that statement being made which just makes me wonder what mindset these people have. You work hard for your money, that I get. You have people to provide for, you have bills to pay which again, I get but does the thought never occur to you that people living in poverty might want the opportunity to work too? That they might want to add some purpose to their existence? Do you honestly think the people who live their lives solely depending on the goodness of someone else to determine when they receive their next meal want to live like that? Do you honestly believe that they enjoy it? Please don’t tell me you do.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week

Only a small percentage of people who live in poverty are able to find work and those who are lucky enough do exactly the same as you and me: they work, lord knows that they work HARD the only difference being that they work for a small income, something which to you and me would seem like worthless change however when they receive it, it makes them feel very wealthy, very wealthy indeed. For them that money will only just stretch and provide, sometimes it’s not even able to do that so what do they do? They sacrifice, they sacrifice their necessities whilst you and me feel poor having to sacrifice a couple of luxuries a month. We don’t get paid one period and it’s no big deal, we just won’t eat out and buy those Nike’s next month. They don’t get paid, their whole family doesn’t eat.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world

Most of us have had an extremely blessed upbringing. Yeah there’s been some bumps along the way but we’ve never missed a meal because we couldn’t afford it. We’ve never had to beg. Imagine that. For a minute just picture yourself having no other options that begging is your only hope. Knocking on doors, approaching people in the streets begging for money, food, shelter and in some cases begging somebody to use your body for some pocket change. How degrading must that be? Selling your body so your loved ones can survive. We shouldn’t feel guilty for the way we live, we should be thankful. Extremely thankful. Thankful that we only need to imagine begging and not actually have to go through it. Thankful that when we get our pay-check we still have money to spare. Thankful that when it’s cold outside we’re warm. Thankful we have access to clean water. Thankful for our health and thankful for a whole lot more.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation you are ahead of 500 million people in the world

Kids these days care more about the latests creps than the poor child who put his blood, sweat and tears into making them. How many people do you think bought a pair of TOMS because they would contribute to helping a child in need receive a pair? I personally think the figure is extremely small because as people we just don’t care. As long as we’re living well and so are our loved ones then why should we care about people who mean nothing to us? I’ll tell you why; because those people could’ve been your family. Your loved ones. It could’ve been you.

If you read this post you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all
